Be seen - be safe! 24 Oct 2024 With the clocks changing, don’t forget to consider your visibility to stay safe

With the clocks soon to change, taking us off British Summer Time and into the months of shorter days, many of us will be spending more time in the darkness when outside. It’s important to remember that low visibility can be a risk, so take some extra precautions to stay safe.

Statistics show that traffic accidents increase during the darker months, both due to low light levels and worsening weather. We should all take more care when driving in poor conditions and at night, and be extra aware of any cyclists, motorcyclists or pedestrians when driving.

If you’re a cyclist, make sure you have bright lights at the front and back of your bike. Always wear a helmet and consider a high-visibility jacket or vest to help you remain visible to drivers and pedestrians when you’re cycling. If there is a cycle lane, try to stay in it as far as possible. Be aware that you will be less visible to vehicles, especially at dawn and dusk when the light levels are changing.

Pedestrians might want to consider wearing high-vis materials when out in the dark and we’d suggest having a small pocket torch with you in addition to your mobile phone in case of emergencies.

Dog owners now have a wide range of choices for lighted collars or leads and high-vis materials for their pet to have on when out for walk. This can help owners easily locate their animals and ensure the dogs are visible to other people and vehicles. Additional lights such as a torch also helps pet owners to clear up after their dogs.
