Can you spare 2 hours a week to help? 27 Jan 2022 Volunteers needed for a basic IT skills class

Eynsham Parish Council is working with Age UK Oxfordshire to re-instate the IT skills class that previously ran at the library. The focus is on boosting confidence and providing basic digital skills so everyone can access the benefits of technology in their daily lives.

Over the past few years, many more people have tried to get online to access services or communicate with loved ones as pandemic restrictions limited movements. It’s important to ensure that everyone has the skills they need to benefit from the opportunities online, while also knowing how to keep themselves safe.

We know there are people in our community who would benefit from a basic IT skills class but we’re lacking the volunteers we need to make it happen. Could you spare some time each week to support the sessions and guide attendees through simple computer-based tasks?

The class would run weekly over two hours in Eynsham during the day, with exact timing and location to be confirmed. Volunteers could either commit to one hour or the full session, depending on availability. There is no requirement for any high-level technical IT skills, as anyone who uses computers and the internet daily possesses the confidence and the basic skill set needed.

Patience is the more important attribute for any would-be volunteer. Volunteers would be supporting people who may be vulnerable or elderly. Attendees may have had little or no experience of computers and the internet. Sensitivity and understanding will be crucial to impart some basic skills and help increase confidence with using a computer or digital device at home.

If you’re interested in getting involved and would like to find out more, please email epc.comms@eynsham-pc.gov.uk. Volunteers would need to register with Age UK Oxfordshire, who would complete a few basic checks and provide any required training about volunteering in the community.
