Taking care in wintry months 19 Nov 2024 Useful tools to help prepare for the winter weather

As we move into the coldest months of the year, the wintry weather may start to cause some disruption to daily life. However, any issues can be mitigated by being prepared, having access to the right information and taking care when out in bad conditions.

Oxfordshire County Council has some online resources that can be helpful, inlcuding this information page on salting and gritting: Salting, gritting and snow clearance | Oxfordshire County Council). There is also an email contact form where residents can let the County Council know of any roads that haven't been gritted, but need to be.

Parents are able to check online whether their child’s school is closed due to adverse weather via this webpage: Unplanned school closures | Oxfordshire County Council.

Heavy snowfall can be disruptive. If you are able to clear the snow around your property, there is a downloadable guide with some practical advice available here: Snow Guide Clearing snow and gritting your own paths will help avoid slips and falls, making it safer for you and anyone passing your home.

We’d encourage residents to proactively monitor the weather forecasr at this time of year to be forewarned of when the coldest days are coming. The Met Office has local, updated weather forecasts over a multi-day period that can be helpful: Eynsham (Oxfordshire) weather - Met Office

If you can’t afford to have the heating on at home as much as you need to, consider spending some time in a local warm place, such as at one of Eynsham’s cafes and pubs or at our local library (closed on Tuesday and Sunday; full opening times here: Eynsham Library | Oxfordshire County Council).

For those struggling with the heating bills, there is a free service, Better Housing Better Health, that provides support for people to stay warm and well at home. Find out more about them on the website: Better Housing Better Health or call 0800 107 0044.
