Eynsham Parish Council has been informed of an extended closure in Barnard Gate that will run from August until late December. This may impact residents’ local travel.
From 12 August until 20 December, the main road through Barnard Gate over Chil Brook will be closed to vehicles for 24 hours per day to allow for repair works on Barnard Gate Bridge. The bridge deck is reported to be in a poor condition and requires replacement.
Residents of Barnard Gate have received letters from Oxfordshire County Council outlining the details and sharing a map of the closed road and the suggested diversion route (via the A40). A copy of this letter is available to download at the bottom of this page.
During the closure of the road over the bridge, there will be no access from the main road onto the private road on the northwest side of the bridge. Residents living on this road will need to use the diversion (marked on the map in the letter below). Those living on the south side will remain able to access their houses.
The bridge is part of the cycle route connecting Witney and Eynsham. Fortunately, despite the closure of the road to vehicles, pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will still be able to use the bridge during the closure period.
The estimated completion date for this work is now 20 December (updated 12 Aug 2024). Read more details and access the map in the document below.
