On Saturday 9 July the Eynsham Community Choir, under its leader and voice practitioner Anne L. Ryan, gave its summer concert in St Leonard’s Church. The ensemble performed a variety of songs from different cultures and genres, including Russian folk, a medieval hymn, a very moving African tribute to Nelson Mandela, with some 60s pop thrown in for good measure. There were a couple of minor glitches but not enough to dampen the enthusiasm of both choir and audience, who were invited to sing along. Particular highlights were The Grey Funnel Line by Cyril Tawney and an arrangement by Rachel Miller (a choir member) of Scarborough Fair. Although introduced as a work in progress the choir’s arrangement of Adele’s Lovesong was delightful. They rounded the evening off with a spirited rendition of A Perfect Day by Lou Reed, after which all retreated to a delicious Pimms and strawberries.
The concert raised funds for the local Eynsham Day Centre, its adopted local charity for 2016.
Eynsham Community Choir meets every Thursday evening from 19:30 to 21:30 at the Baptist Church Hall. The autumn term starts on 29 September. The choir learns by ear so no need to be able to read music, nor are there any auditions. You will learn about singing, harmony, rhythm and have fun doing it. If you are interested in joining and would like to come along to a taster session, do contact Anne. More men are particularly welcome!
