“The churchyard at St Leonard’s has been filling steadily over recent years and there are now only 12 non-reserved spaces left. In considering the situation at its meeting in June, St Leonard’s PCC reluctantly took the decision that it would have to apply for the new section of the churchyard to be closed to new burials. Application will therefore be made to the Ministry of Justice to close the churchyard as it will be full within less than a year.
“The new churchyard will continue to be open to receive burials on reserved plots, and in some cases for family graves, and will also be open for the interment of ashes and burial of cremated remains.
“Responsibility for the churchyard will pass briefly to Eynsham Parish Council and then to West Oxfordshire District Council, who will also then be responsible for providing a site for burials, which is likely to be outside the village. Eynsham Parish Council have had some funds available and have been searching for a new site in the village for some time, without success so far.
“The old part of the churchyard will remain open for the present, whilst opinions are sought from residents about the possibility of overburial on existing graves and investigation into available funding for this.
“If you have any views on this issue please write to the Parochial Church Council Secretary, 21 High Street, Eynsham OX29 4HE by the end of December 2014 so that the PCC can take your views into consideration.”
