Councillors at Great Big Green Week 16 Sep 2021 Catch our councillors at the Great Big Green Week to learn more about some on-going 'green' projects

Make sure the 18th September is marked on the calendar – it’s the start the Great Big Green Week (GBGW) and the beginning of a seven-day spectacular of activities, events, talks and exhibitions focused on climate change and the environment. Events are planned all over the UK to celebrate action towards preserving and protecting our planet, but Eynsham residents won’t have to go far to get involved.

In the village and its surrounds, many local groups are running sessions or activities on a whole manner of topics to enthuse the community into action on climate change. You may have read about some in the September newsletter from Green TEA, with many being highlighted on the main Eynsham Online news page. A few of these have been spearheaded by Eynsham Parish Council, with our councillors taking the opportunity to inform the community of the ‘green’ projects we have in progress. This reflects the interest across the council in preserving our local environment for the future.

Our Vice Chair Ross Macken will be joined by other council members at St Leonard’s Hall on Saturday 25th from 11am until 5pm with a display on the ‘Green Wheel’ project that EPC is working on. The intention is to safeguard some of the existing green spaces in our community to mitigate any damage from planned development works. The exhibition will remain up during Sunday 26th (12-4pm) for anyone interested in learning more.

Cllr Tricia Crowley will also be in the Hall during the weekend of 25th/26th with a display on another of EPC’s on-going concerns: a consultation around speed limit reduction within the village and some surrounding roads. You can read more from Tricia on this topic in the latest issue of Eynsham News, due to be published mid/late September.

On the opening weekend of the GBGW (18th/19th), Tricia will be found in Back Lane car park (during the trials of electric vehicles and e-bikes) conducting a survey on the appeal of car sharing in Eynsham. There are different models of car clubs and car sharing platforms to consider. If the survey indicates a sufficient level of interest, more information will be provided.

More details on the car club scheme – and how it works in practice – are available at the Talk Tent on Saturday 25th where, at 2pm, Tricia will be giving a brief talk on two case studies: in Iffley and Henley. The tent will be set up in Market Square and host a whole range of talks throughout the day (10.30am-2pm), from forest bathing and hedgehog highways to building greener homes.

As many of our councillors are, like Tricia, members of community groups that are involved in activities of their own over the week, you will likely spot some familiar faces at other events. This reflects the collective enthusiasm of EPC for climate change issues and preserving the environment, for today and the years to come. We hope to meet many of you across the week and inspire you to join us as we all do what we can to for our small but lovely patch of Oxfordshire – and the planet.
