Renovating The Square

Renovating The Square (6 Sep 2002)

Text reads as follows...

A VILLAGE project, dating back to the Queen’s Silver Jubilee, has finally become reality, 25 years later.

The Eynsham Market Square improvement scheme, costing about £120,000, was officially opened, on Saturday, by parish council chairman Gordon Beach.

And there was a double celebration, as a plaque was also unveiled to commemorate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee.

The scheme has turned the square into a ‘pedestrian friendly’ place, with a paved area of York stone slabs, additional seating, and bollards restricting where traffic can go.

It was on the agenda in 1977, but lost out to another village project, the refurbishing of the Bartholomew Rooms, to mark the Silver Jubilee. Former parish councillor Sue Chapman, a driving force for the scheme, said: ‘We have turned it into a pedestrian-friendly area, that also looks much better’.
