It is now some time since the Day Centre opened for the elderly and infirm when we were able to use the Youth Club as part of the school some twenty years ago, under the guidance of Sandra Jones and together with a small dedicated group which relied on charity and was very successful.
Now the Centre comes under Social Services and clients have to be recommended by a doctor or Social Services. We still meet on Mondays when our members have the opportunity to leave their homes, enjoy each other's company and make new friends.
The Centre is overseen by Ruth Gould, our co-ordinator and Norma Gummow, her deputy, both of whom are qualified nurses, and we have a super professional cook in Angela Green. Other helpers — some part-time, others all-day — are very valuable to the Centre's success.
Overall, both clients and helpers really enjoy every Monday, with a variety of speakers, music, quizzes and other stimulating games. As we are about to celebrate our 25th anniversary, we have agreed that on 14 June we would welcome friends, neighbours and possible newcomers — either between 10:00 and noon for coffee, or from 14:00 to 15:15 for tea and cakes.
We do appreciate the interest shown by our regular visitors, and would welcome most sincerely any newcomers who can find the time to drop in.
Chris Hall, Chairperson.
The Centre meets on Mondays 10:00-15:00 in the Village Hall, with a good lunch midday. If you are a senior citizen unable to get out much, need a relief from four walls, and in need of good company, why not try us out? There are cards, dominoes, crafts, or just a quiet chat.
Afternoons are filled with speakers, various entertainers, plus quizzes. If mobility is a problem we would hope we could arrange transport. Do come in for a coffee and see us or give us a call.
Co-ordinator, Ruth Gould (01993 773010).
