The Final Chapter 23 Jun 2012 Requiem Mass celebrated by the Archbishop of Birmingham for nine bodies from the Eynsham Abbey site, retrieved 1989-92

A Requiem Mass is celebrated by the Most Revd Bernard Longley Archbishop of Birmingham on the occasion of the burial of nine bodies from the Eynsham Abbey site, dug up during the archaeological dig from 1989-92. Six, who are young men from the medieval period, were found in the cloister and are thus assumed to be young monks of the Abbey. Three are from the 16th / 17th century and were found under the floor of the Refectory. They are thus assumed to be Catholics buried in secret by the Catholic family who bought the Abbey Park after the Dissolution ...

We are grateful to Julian Griffiths and friends for singing the traditional Gregorian chant that would have been familiar to the monks and to the Byrd Choir who will sing Byrd’s Mass in Four Parts ...

At the end of the Mass we will take the bodies to their final resting place which will be fairly near where the 16th century bodies were found. Please follow the procession out to the graveyard. You are welcome to the buffet lunch afterwards.
