30 Years On ... 27 Feb 2018 Raymond Elliot reflects on local homelessness as winter bites

Gatehouse is a drop-in centre for the homeless and vulnerably housed. It is based in the parish rooms of the Anglican Church at the bottom of the Woodstock Road. The Project provides a welcoming atmosphere with tea, sandwiches and cakes for two hours every day. In addition it provides warm clothing; art, literacy and computer groups; one-to-one support, non-judgmental space; an informal listening ear and advice and referral to other organisations - visit the website.

The Three Eynsham Churches have supported Gatehouse since it started in 1988. In the early days members from St Peter’s acted as volunteers behind the counter and transported the collections of food and clothing to the original premises in St Michael Street. At present Eynsham Rotary Club provides a year-round service of transporting the consignment of clothes and food (which we collect every 6 weeks) into Oxford. We are most grateful for their support - and for all the contributions of food and clothing regularly received from the three Churches and from supporters in the village.

The Director of Gatehouse will be giving a talk in the Tolkien Room at 19:30 on 17 May, to which all are welcome. The talk will also refer to the question of homelessness in Oxford generally.
