Bartholomew Players News

Rehearsals in full swing for May play 31 Mar 2017 Bartholomew Players are producing Humble Boy by Charlotte Jones - get your tickets now!

From the author of the current TV series “The Halcyon”, comes this tale of dysfunctional families, reversed social hierarchy and humility set in the idyllic Cotswold Countryside. This play is inspired by Hamlet where Felix Humble returns home after learning of the death of his father, to find his mother about to marry the completely unsuitable George Pye. The ensuing revelations about a daughter Felix knew nothing about and his own mental difficulties in maintaining his familial and professional responsibilities will elicit laughter, tears and empathy in those watching this play.

The Sunday Times called this play “Sad, very sad; funny, very, very funny … this is a seriously wonderful play”. Written in 2001 and premiered at the Royal National Theatre, London, it won 3 Best New Play awards.  Written by Charlotte Jones who devised and co-wrote “The Halcyon” which recently finished showing on ITV, we are excited to bring you this modern play which will take you through a range of emotions with modern-day undertones of Hamlet and a love of bee-keeping thrown in for good measure.

Debi Lisburne Diacon, director, said: “I have wanted to direct this play ever since I first saw it in the West End in 2002. We have been lucky to assemble a talented, experienced cast, two of whom are new to Bartholomew Players. I just love the way the characters are so well drawn - and hopefully well acted! I’d like to bet you go home saying you know someone just like them….  So please do come, though you maybe have not heard of this play. You won’t regret it!”

As usual, we are partnering with a local group for our Charity Supper Show on Friday 19 May - this time “Bike Safe: B4044 Eynsham to Botley Community Path” will assist us in organising the evening in return for a share of the profits. We look forward to seeing you!
